We all have heard the wedding disc jockey horror stories of a bride and groom who decided to hire a $300.00 DJ from Craigslist. It seems that despite the horror stories, bride & grooms still take their chances hiring one of those Craigslist DJs. You know the ole saying, "you get what you pay for". That is one statement that says it all!
We could use hundreds of examples to illustrate these so-called Craigslist DJs but we will leave it up you to have fun with that one.
What most brides & grooms don't realize is that there are many companies that puts a lot of time into the planning of a wedding. It is not as easy as simply discussing the details by phone and only once at that. A reputable company will have multiple planning sessions that will seek to discuss the music, The timeline, the staging & lighting, etc. There is an incredible amount of time that goes into each wedding that we perform at. We know many companies that go above and beyond when it comes to wedding planning. Many of our colleagues are one man shows meaning they do not run a multi-op company with an administrative staff or in house planners. These guys sacrifice much of their own time to making sure the event is a success. These are guys who also know that being sharp and focused is the key to their success. We respect these guys a great deal!
Rates for the DJ industry vary greatly, ranging from $350.00 to over $5,000.00 with an average of $1,200.00 for a 4 hour booking. The best price is not always the best deal, especially if you are planning a wedding. As a matter of fact, surveys conclude that nearly 100% of brides would have spent more money on their entertainment and made it their #1 priority in hindsight.
Why? Again we stress that it takes time to plan each wedding, to go over the timelines, go over the music selection, work with the event planner if there is one not to mention the work on the day of the wedding such as loading, setting up, playing the music, motivating the guests to dance, tearing down, loading up and then going back to the office where there is yet more unloading to be done. Most brides & grooms have no idea what goes into the entertainment aspect of the wedding. The fact of the matter is that the entertainment you choose will either make or break that special day. When we ask people day in and day out, they will always say that the most memorable part of the wedding was the entertainment. That's it, plain and simple!
Buyer beware!
If you need assistance in selecting a reputable DJ, try contacting the local American Disc Jockey Association chapter in the city you live or the location of your wedding. Usually the venues will have a list of recommendations as well or preferred vendors so to speak.
