I wanted to learn to write poetry, and I thought I would be a better writer if I knew how to play music. Poetry is primarily an aural art, and rhythm is its natural voice.
Beginning
I found a teacher and borrowed a guitar from a friend. My first lesson was the instruction to memorize the chromatic scale, so I did that, and when I recited it, my next instruction was to recite it backward. So I had something to consider: with art forms, you want to try to make use and ceremony of every sense taken and directed from every vantage point. Music moves on the guitar, and you learn to hear and see and know how it does it.
What Is Playing Music For?
Playing music is for application to anything that you recognize as an association for it. I began to observe that I understood arithmetic in a way that was new to me, and so I became aware that if a discipline seems out of reach or your understanding of it is obscured, you need to make it relative to something else. All disciplines are related to all others, and art consumes all things known in thought or experience. Art is the particular and full enjoyment of knowledge.
How Can You Be Sure Of Accomplishment With Music?
You have to make the decision to play music. Schedule time for practice and keep to the schedule. Play whenever you have time to play. Practice is your methodical acquisition of place in the company of musicians. You will find your way and your style and your apparent identity in the cultural bond of music.
How Can You Graduate From Student to Musician?
Learn to play your guitar by learning from and sharing with others. You find a friend who plays the guitar, and you learn something from your friend, and you return the gift by explaining some principle or showing some technique to your friend. Take what you learn with you, and remember where you found it. Friendship is also an art form.
Making The Commitment To Yourself
If you don't play the guitar but would like to play, make a commitment to acquiring the skill and authority that you will need to make your music become an expression of yourself. If you want to play, you have to begin to play. You are your own best friend, so teach yourself all that you can find to learn and don't forget to share what you learn with other people. Add a new element to your thoughts and to your social relationships and make a new beginning in your life.
By the way, you also might take time for writing. Your considered record of insight and experience can be shared with other people who really will want to know about the things that you have known and done in your life.
