How To Create a DJ Mix Demo

When it comes to promoting yourself as a DJ, you're going to need a promotional tool that will show off your mixing skills and you do that by recording a DJ mix demo.

DJ mix demo is the core element of your promotional toolkit. Without one, no one is going to know who you are and what style of music you spin.

I'm not going to give to much detail here about how to mix your records, but I will mention that the quality of sound should be kept in mind when recording your demo. I can't emphasis this enough that focusing on quality when creating your demo is an important aspect of promoting. Nobody wants a poor quality demo. They'll just end up throwing it away. I will describe the process of going about completing your music project.

Your demo can be in two formats. You can have an audio CD and an MP3 file for the Internet.

CD: This is a tangible disc that your fans can listen to in their car stereo or any audio sound system.

To make your CD demos, you'll need a CD recorder. If you don't have the recording equipment to create your demos, partner up with a friend who does. Decide how many copies you're going to duplicate and go out and buy blank CD's.

MP3 file: This is a compressed digital audio format.

You can record onto your PC using digital audio editing software that converts audio sound into MP3 files. You can also rip your audio CD's onto your hard drive as an MP3 files using encoding software.

Once you have the recording equipment you need, record a 60 minute mix showing off your skills. After you finish recording your demo, give it a name. Giving your demo a theme or a name helps make it more marketable.

Now make CD labels. Make sure that the image of your CD labels looks as good as it sounds before presenting it. Also, put your contact information: website URL and e-mail address only and state on the label, "For Promotional Use Only." This protects you from copyright infringement.

So as you can see, making a DJ mix demo is easy as long as you have to equipment to implement your project. If you're missing any gear to complete the recording of your demos, find someone who has what you need. Learn whatever you can about home recording studios and the tools available to you.
