Many good ideas are found to be wanting once they are tested by time and the discerning eye of many who can spot flaws, hype and under-performance, and who will not stand for sub-standard performance. After certain entities are transported outdoors and seen in the unyielding clarity of pure sunlight, they are sometimes never to be heard from again, and often that's possibly just as well. One of those "things" enjoyed wide acceptance for decades, was found in homes all over the world and made a decisive, lasting impact on culture and communication.
The technology was first brought forth many years ago and is known to almost everyone in Western civilization. The objects that made all of this come true are vinyl records, which created an entirely unique market for music that could be enjoyed in your home. Vinyl's sound quality became increasingly better as the years came and went, and record making techniques became more advanced. New 78 RPM discs replaced recording formats of then, which included wax, wire and cylinder recordings, each of which had its problems.
Older recordings that predated vinyl were breakable and had a limited ability to contain recordings of any length, which made them unsuitable for broad distribution throughout the world. It is hard to overestimate the impression that LPs made on the world's music buyers when they were introduced because recording artists then received a larger canvas on which to express their creative musical ideas. Unlike the 78, vinyl LPs allowed the recording artist to make a more sizable, longer lasting impact on audiences. You could collect and listen to LP recordings of music of various varieties, and soon, music of every variety was produced on vinyl LPs as well as 45 RPM singles.
Whether you were inclined toward music by Rachmaninoff, or you were looking for the Beatles vinyl recordings, you'd get bright, artistic graphics and photography on each album cover. Vinyl was king for generations, but as with all kings it was a no-brainer that an upstart would come to the forefront with a plan to dethrone the monarch.
As compact discs quickly edged vinyl off the shelves of record shops, it seemed that LPs, 45 and 78 RPM records would become relics that were fit for nothing more than the recycle bin. But then a peculiar thing happened when an uptick of enthusiasm for vintage vinyl recordings developed a grassroots following. Pretty soon, it was clear that a real number of people still appreciated the warmth and marvelous sound reproduction qualities of vinyl recordings.
And for the record, it's not just gray-haired Elvis vinyl collectors who like vinyl.
Younger folks are moved by the retro vibe and high quality performance of vinyl, and that's clearly enough to start a revival.
