What Is An Easy First Song For Beginners To Play On Piano Or Keyboard?

Have you just bought yourself a keyboard or piano, or has somebody got you one as a gift, but you don't know where to start or what songs to start with?

When you start learning piano or keyboard there are so many books and courses to consider it is easy to get yourself in a muddle and not know where to start!

It is always advisable to learn songs hands apart first and then put them together once you are happy with both sections.

As a beginner it is important to get a song that has a simple bass line. It could be chord based or individual notes but it is vital to get something that isn't too complicated. Many people new to learning musical instruments have big ideas for a song choice but sometimes can pick something too challenging for a beginner.

Always use the fingering advised in your song as this is important for the fluidity of your music. Get into good habits from the start because this way once you reach a level to play a song you've been dying to learn it will be that little bit easier to pick up.

One song that is perfect for any enthusiastic keyboard or piano player is 'Let it be' by The Beatles.

This song is in the key of C Major, and sounds great even when simplified for a beginner due to the delicateness of the melody.

When learning 'Let It Be' it is important to really master the right hand melody section, as this is the most complex part of the song. Break it down into small sections by starting with the Intro, then the Verse and then the Chorus.

An example of the intro section right hand notes and fingering are: -

FINGERING - 5 4 3 2 1 2 1 2 2

RIGHT HAND - A G F E D C B C C

An example of the intro section left hand notes and fingering are: -

FINGERING - 5 1

LEFT HAND - F C

Once you have mastered this section practice the left hand separately and then put together like this: -

FINGERING - 5 4 3 2 1 2 1 2 2

RIGHT HAND - A G F E D C B C C

LEFT HAND - F C F C

FINGERING - 5 1 5 1

Your teacher should give you a homework sheet and write out everything that you have covered in your lesson, setting out a practice plan too.

Try to get into a routine of sticking to this, and you will be amazed by how quickly you will get to grips with playing.
