Music and rhythms are an integral part of our society throughout our ancient history right up to the present time. It can provide people with a sense of identity, instil a wide range of emotions, and transport people to a place of almost "trance like" space, from just listening to it or creating/making it.
Most people that come along to a Drum Circle are a little unsure of what to expect at first. Many say that they have no sense of rhythm or musical knowledge; people often need reminding that we ALL have rhythm inside of us and all around us.
For example our bodies have the constant beat of the heart, our breath, our talking, our walking etc. Also our world around us shows its rhythmic style and cycles, like the crashing of waves on a beach, storms, the sound of the wind, the sun and moon's cycles, bird calls, the seasons etc.
The many benefits of Group Drumming in a Community setting such as a Drum Circle can promote an increase in self-confidence, build upon the individual's socialization skills, build self-esteem and provide a place to just connect with others who share a love of music. It can provide people a space to be themselves and without judgement express and release stress with the help of a drum or a percussive instrument.
Most people, who attend a drum circle, share of negative experiences at school, whereby a teacher has condoned them for doing something wrong in music class, whereby a Drum Circle allows an expressive and relaxed approach to appreciation of music and rhythm.
The beauty of a shared musical experience is that they are all unique, every time, and as a rhythm is flowing along, it can change in a heartbeat, taking the group on another journey.
Studies in group music making have also shown to offer a sense of positivity and wellbeing, and can also, incorporated with guided imagery, reduce stress, and promote physical healing. Participants also have shared that their musical experiences have made them feel like they forget their worries and stress during that time. Furthermore certain sounds produced by different drums and percussive instruments resonate with particular people.
People that attend Drum Circles don't necessarily have to know "rhythm" or be "musical" the facilitator guides people to express themselves with either Drums or Percussive instruments and subtly "bring out" the participants creativity, while they make music and at the same time, can learn about timing, many different cultures musical styles, and tempo.
