It's true you know, guitarist's get all the chicks. That's just the way it goes. You've probably heard something like that before, and I can attest to the fact that it definitely has some merit. It was one of the reasons I picked up the guitar in the first place. There are a number of reasons that people learn to play guitar though. For instance Dave Murray of Iron Maiden said he kept playing because he liked the way he looked in the mirror when he was playing. Hey, too each their own I guess. For most of us though we just want to learn to play our favorite songs from our favorite bands. That's actually one of the best reasons to start playing.
Whatever your reasons, most people begin learning the guitar sometime in their teens or early twenties. The reason for this; I think, is that is that is when people begin to develop a real social life. They develop the need to feel cool and be accepted by society. If you play guitar fairly well that acceptance happens all the time. I remember the first time I noticed that people really were impressed with my playing. I had played some classical guitar concerts, but not much else. So one day I was waiting for a class to start at my local college and picked up my guitar and started playing. Within a literally a few seconds I looked up to see a crowd standing around watching me. When I was done people said the strangest things to me;
"Wow! That was fantastic. Where did you learn to play like that?"
"I've never seen anyone play like that? What was that?"
In my head I'm thinking, "Uh well it was a simple song I play every day to warm up." I don't really know what it is anymore that makes people who do not play the guitar be impressed with people who do. But I can say that I am always motivated to practice a little longer and a little harder when it happens.
There are a number of good reasons to start playing guitar in your teens, or whatever your age. After a few years of practicing, there will be a number of things that can happen.
1. You will continue to play for your friends and at parties. I even paid my way through college playing little gigs around San Francisco and even out on the Warf or in the subway; I actually made pretty good money for a college student doing it too.
2. You may become very serious about it and practice quite a bit and then start a band and begin touring or even "making it" and working as a full time musician.
3. You will play for the rest of your life for fun; you will use your playing to express yourself and your emotions.
