Expressing Yourself Through Arts

Some of us are good with words. When we are happy, sad, angry or grieving, we go sit down and start pouring our hearts out in our diaries. We write all the thoughts bothering us, until all of them are on paper and it seems to lift a burden from our minds.

Others choose to express themselves through words too but they do it more overtly. They cry, shout or share their feelings with a friend, a loved one. They choose to talk about it to someone as they feel sharing grief with someone lessens the burden.

Why arts?

These are not the only two ways to express yourself though. People use arts to express their thoughts, without the use of any words. The unspoken language lets you preserve your ideas, feelings and moments forever. They also present a unique way of catharsis. And the great thing about art, is that it is the reflection of an artist and is open to different interpretations of the viewer, reader, and listener.

In the words of George Bernard Shaw,

"Without art the crudeness of reality would make the world unbearable."

So, you can imagine art to be a form of expression that can help us maintain our sanity, in times of grief and sadness.

Forms of art

Perhaps, the art form which is perceived to be the most common is drawing and painting. The word 'art' immediately conjures up in our mind, the image of an artist bent over on canvas, giving shapes, colors and forms to their feelings.

Medical researches have established that painting can help children express their feelings. Drawing has also been used as a method of intervention with traumatized children.

Some prefer to express themselves through poems. William Wordsworth chose to glorify nature in his poems while it was the afterthought on the death of poet Richard West that got Thomas Grey to pen down the Elegy Written in a Country Churchyard.

Music composition is another way that people use to let out their feelings. Events and your current mood can trigger you to work on music composition. Your mood will influence what kind of song you write and how you compose it. It allows you to express your feelings.

People use art therapy as a means of relieving stress. Art therapy includes activities such as creating items out of clay, creating cards, weaving, doing transformational self-portrait and creating animal collages. These activities can be used for children, adults, senior citizen and victims of emotional or physical violence, which just goes to show how powerful art can be in healing and leading to the path of self-discovery.
