Final Curtain or Shower Curtain?

Having just finished watching yet another talent show, Debbie asked her mum "how can I become a singer Mum? She had done what most kids do today; she had confused the ability to sing with becoming a singer. The two are not necessarily the same.

If you are blessed with a reasonable voice, one that can hold a note or a tune, then the chances are you are already a singer. What you do with that gift is down to you. More importantly what you want to do is more to the point.

If, like young Debbie, you want to be the next Beyonce or Adele then be prepared for a lot of hard work, and a lot of disappointments. Only a very few make it to the top, and that is with a lot of talent and even more luck. You will need to practice morning, noon and night, protect your voice, and attend every audition going.

One can increase their chances of success by having singing lessons from a fully qualified singing coach. Hopefully they will be honest and tell you how good, or bad, you really are. They will help you improve your voice, and advise the best repertoire for your given range. Even then the chances of success are, at best, minimal.

If you are prepared to lower your sights, but still crave the limelight then there is the musical theater. How many of us have delighted watching productions such as Mamma Mia, Les Miserable or Phantom of the Opera. Every member of the cast is a singer, many will have started in the chorus line. This is an excellent way of honing your craft. Many of the West End's leading men and women, who are household names today, started their careers in this way. Remember they may well have attended dozens of auditions before striking it lucky. It is not an easy path, but the exhilaration of getting a part cannot be beaten.

If fame and fortune is not what you are looking for, then there are many local churches, choirs and societies looking for people who can sing. You see singing is something that comes from within. It should bring joy to the singer and hopefully the listener. Debbie asked her mum "how can I become a singer" but that is not really what she meant is it? Otherwise she could do what most of us do - she could take a shower!
